Introduction

Globalization is ushering in competition basically on three parameters – Quality, Cost and Timeliness. In some ways all three are related and require investment into the operations. Managements would like to find out the cost-benefit of this additional outlay. Conventionally, investments on the quality front and its direct returns were not qualifiable but methods for evaluating the ROI in a scientific manner are now available to the industry.

Philip B. Crosby in his book titled ‘Quality is free’ introduced financial focus to investments in quality improvement. To evaluate the cost of quality, it is necessary that organizations have standard procedures and methods that are acceptable across the board. It is widely accepted that the cost of quality (CoQ) in Indian manufacturing industry is typically above 25 percent of turnover while it is substantially higher in case of service sector (in some cases even 40 percent of the turnover).

This programme has been designed to enable identify the quality costs in their operations, evaluate & quantity the same and then take appropriate measure to reduce them.
