Introduction: The Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 is a landmark legislation ensuring that employers share the profit of the establishments by way of statutory bonus. It creates a framework that balances the rights of employees with the financial capacity of employers. Despite being one of the most widely applicable labour laws, the Act often raises complex questions around applicability, profit computation, set-on and set-off, forfeiture, and compliance requirements. Non-compliance with bonus provisions exposes employers to legal risks, financial liabilities, and reputational damage.
